Middletown, RI - Gloria (Wilkins) Slavens, 88, of Middletown, RI died Saturday,September 28, 2013 in the presence of her family after a short stay at Newport Hospital Newport,RI. Born in Somerville, MA on December 2, 1924, she was the daughter of the late HerbertWilkins and Florence (Dalton) Wilkins. Gloria was a member of Business and Professional Womans of Newport and JamestownCounties, a member of the Newport Navy League and belonged to St. Pauls Methodist Churchin Newport RI. Gloria worked for the Vanderbilt family for a number of years, was a dental assistant for Dr. Moody and also worked for the People's Credit Union. Gloria also was licensed as a Realtor in 1970. She held the GRI, CRS, SRES, PMN, andCRB designations. Gloria was the 1981 Newport County Board of Realtors President, 1986Womans Council President and State Wide MLS President, and she was also the 1987 RIassociation of Realtors President. She was awarded the Newport County Board of Realtors"Realtor of the Year" Award in 1980, the 1984 WCR "Woman of the Year" Award and the 1989"RI Association of Realtors" Award. In 1992 she received the "Barbara Kerney" Award, 1995earned and became certified as a broker, in 2001 she earned the "Seniors Real Estate Specialist"designation and in 2006 was named the "Newport County Board of Realtors Emeritus". Gloria had a full and rewarding career as a realtor. She has an award named after her the"Gloria Slavens" award which honors other realtors for their accomplishments in real estate. She is survived by her children, Wendy Borodemos of Middletown, RI, Thomas Slavensand his wife Carol of Chelsea, ME, Kenneth Slavens and his wife Linda of Pomfret Center, CT.and daughter-in-law Ruth Slavens of Ocala Fla. She is also survived by her grandchildren, ErikBorodemos and his wife Sophie, Ashley Borodemos, Thomas A Slavens Jr and his wife Gina,Jeffrey Slavens, and Jennifer Slavens, her great-grandchildren, Harry, Chloe, Izaiah, Christopher,Troy, Alyssa and Nephew Sean Morrill. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas I.Slavens, her son Walter "Wally" D. Slavens, and her sister Glenna Morrill. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday October 2, 2013 from 5-8pm in the MemorialFuneral Home 375 Broadway, Newport. Her funeral will be held on Thursday October 3, 2013, at 10:00am in the funeral home.Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Memorial donations may be made to Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
