Gordon Gordy Johnson, 63, of Middletown, RI, after a heroic battle with cancer, passed away on May 7, 2011. He was the son of the late Virginia Weston Johnson and Clifford Johnson III.Gordy graduated from Rogers High School in 1966. He retired in 2009 from various positions at the Newport Naval Base. He played softball for many years with the Newport Softball League until he discovered golf in the mid 1980s when Green Valley Country Club became his second home. Even though he started playing golf late in life, he became passionate about the game and an excellent player, winning many tournaments and more importantly, the hearts of each and every member of the club. Gordy was an avid New England sports fan, especially the Red Sox, Bruins and the Patriots. He and his beloved wife, Judith, enjoyed many travels, especially trips to Hawaii with best friends, Barbara and Timmy ODonnell.He is survived by his wife, Judith Perl Rosenthal, his son, Gordon Johnson, Jr., his daughter and son-in-law, Alicia and Theodore Jones, grandsons, Tre and Tevin, his brothers and sisters, the late Billy Weston and his wife, Irene, Harold Weston, Rosalie Weston, Clifford Johnson IV and his wife, Dianne, Virginia Lombard, William Johnson and his wife, Vale, the late Arleen Johnson, Phyllis Bradley and her husband, Leon, David Johnson, Robert Johnson and his companion, Linda, Gary Johnson and his wife, Joanne, Wayne Johnson, Pamela Massey, Charlene Willingham, Cheryl Torrey and her husband, Larry, Kevin Johnson and his wife, Marie, and Dawn Daniels and her husband, Tommy, as well as over 100 nieces and nephews.Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 from 2-4 and 5-7 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.A service and celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 5 pm at Green Valley Country Club, 371 Union Street, Portsmouth, RI.In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
