Holyoke, MA - Harold L. Riegel, 85, departed this life peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at the Comfort Care Unit of the Holyoke Soldier?s Home. He was the husband of Kathleen Comiskey Riegel. Born in Newport, RI on November 27, 1921, he was the son of the late Charles and Maude Sisson Riegel.Mr. Riegel was a 1941 graduate of Rogers High School. He was a United States Air Force Veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of Sergeant and served in the European Theater. Harold was retired after being employed by the Water Pollution Control Department of the City of Newport. He previously worked as a gardener for various Newport estates Young, Hill, Auchincloss, and Wetmore. He was an avid Celtic Fan and postage stamp collector. He leaves his loving wife, Kathleen Comiskey Riegel, his son John C. Riegel and his wife Joan Smith, his daughter Shelia Riegel-Vannucci and husband Steve of Springfield, MA, his brothers Raymond Riegel, Herbert Riegel and Robert Riegel all of Newport, RI, and Milton Riegel of California, his sister Kay Riegel Nasser of Portsmouth, RI, three grandchildren, Sean Kasey and Shara and one great grandchild Riley.He was the brother of the late Charles and William Riegel.The Riegel Family would like to thank the staff of all shifts of the Comfort Care Unit at the Holyoke S oldiers Home for exceptional care given to Harold and the many volunteers of Hospice Life Care in Springfield and Newport Hospice for their compassion and concern.Burial will be on Tuesday morning from the Hambly Funeral Home, in Trinity Cemetery, Portsmouth, RI.The services will be private.In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to the Comfort Care Unit at the Holyoke Soldiers Home, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
