, RI - Harold Hal Robert Emerson, 63, of 25 Thurston Avenue, Newport, RI, died Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. Born in Muroc, CA on April 27, 1945, he was the son of the late Harold R. Emerson, Sr. and Martha Lynn Emerson. Hal moved to Newport in 1978. Hal was raised in Belmont Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard University, class of 67, where he played varsity football as a member of Winthrop House. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was discharged after sustaining injuries during a training mission. Hal owned and operated numerous restaurants and nightclubs throughout the greater Boston area, Cape Cod and Vermont, before moving to Newport where he worked at La Forge, The Dockside Saloon, Latitude 41, Jubilee Clock, The White Horse Tavern, and co-owned and operated Fricks at the Bayview in Jamestown. He worked throughout Rhode Island as a wine consultant and broker. He is survived by three children, Jodi Emerson Duva of San Diego, CA, Keith Emerson of Napa, CA, and Eric Emerson of Portsmouth, RI; three grandchildren, Lucas and Samatha Duva and Aubrey Emerson; and many beloved friends. His welcoming nature brought people, of all different walks of life, into his open arms. He gave of himself, tirelessly and always was ready to be there or help, when his friends needed him. An aura of good-times surrounded him and both friends and strangers were drawn to him Hal reveled in the delight of good company. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. A memorial celebration will be held with family and friends on Sunday, March 15, 2009 at 2p.m. at Yesterdays Restaurant in Newport, RI.
