Harold Winthrop Sands, son of Harold Aymar Sands and Muriel Winthrop Sands, born August 25, 1926, died peacefully May 28, 2014 surrounded by friends and family.He was a descendant of the first families of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He was an international banker by trade and a philanthropist by choice. He was a member of the following organizations: Freeman of the City of London; governor of the Reading Room; Knight of Ethiopia; Board member of the Newport Preservation Society; board member of the Newport Historical Society. He was a graduate of the class of 1946 at St. Georges school in Middletown, RI. He was a Master Sergeant of the 101st Armored Calvary Reconnaissance.He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan Baker Sands, his son Harold Baker Sands, daughter Serena Winthrop Sands, his daughter in law Sara Churgin Sands and his grandchildren Hayden Sands, Jesse Sands, Wynter Sands and Jordan Sands.
