Longtime Newport resident Harry W. Rice Jr. died on December 3, 2014 at the age of 81. He was born in New York City on February 6, 1933 the son of Harry W. Rice and Evelyn Perry Rice. He moved to Newport at the age of 14 and graduated from Rogers High School in 1951. He was a Korean War Veteran having served in the Army as a Corporal. He worked for the Post Office in Chicago and Middletown for 30 years and was the first Black rural carrier in Rhode Island with a route in Middletown. He was very active in the African-American History community in Rhode Island and his family roots in Newport go back to the mid 1700's. He is survived by his wife Dolores E. Lee-Rice of Middletown, his children Lawrence Rice of Chicago Il, Natalya Rice-Williams and Tmaika Rice of Charlotte NC; and his wife's children Richard Riley of Newport RI, Cheryl Poole of San Diego, CA and Joseph Lee of Las Vegas NV. He leaves a brother John Rice of Portsmouth RI and a deceased brother George Rice. He and his wife have 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.The wake will be held at 6:00-8:00pm on Thursday, December 11 in the Hambly Brick House, 30 Red Cross Ave. Newport RI. His funeral service will be held on Friday, December 12 at 1:00 PM in the Hambly Brick House. Burial will be private.
