Hazel M. Silvia Lopes of St. Clare Home, Spring Street, Newport, formerly of Wapping Road, Portsmouth and Holland Street, Newport, died Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Newport Hospital.She was the wife of the late Joseph Lopes for 52 years.Born in Newport, RI, she was the daughter of the late Louis F. and Francisca Caiano Silvia.Mrs. Lopes was a Senior Girl Scout Leader in Portsmouth for many years and was a champion figure roller skater in her youth. She had worked as an LPN in Washington, DC and also did volunteer work with handicapped children in DC. She was on the Monday Triple Bowling League at Aquidneck Lanes and on the Golden Girls at the Ryan Center. Mrs. Lopes was also a communicant of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth. She is survived by her son, Joseph L. Lopes and his wife Kathleen H. Lopes of Portsmouth, RI; and many nieces and nephews including Joseph Silvia and his wife Barbara, and Louis Silvia, all of California.She was the sister of the late Louis F. Silvia, Mary S. Bridger, Beatrice Merritt and Emily Moore.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 10 am from Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
