Newport, RI - Helen Hazard Harpin, 92, of 42 Cranston Avenue,Newport, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 at Newport Hospital, Newport,RI.She was the wife of the late Charles Henry Harpin. Mrs. Harpin was born in Newport, RI on October 16, 1911, the daughter of the late William Douglas and Charlotte Mahan Hazard.A lifelong resident of Newport, Mrs. Harpin was a direct decendent of one of Newport?s Founders, Thomas Hazard. Her father, William Douglas Hazard, was the owner and publisher of the Newport Herald. Mrs. Harpin graduated from Pembroke College in 1933, andworked as a social worker in Providence, RI until her marriage in 1942.After taking time off to raise her children, she went back to work as a secretary at St. George?s Episcopal Church during the 1960s and 1970s. Mrs. Harpin was a member of the Preservation Society, the Historical Society and St. George?s Episcopal Church where she also worked in its Thrift Shop. She is survived by two sons, LTC Paul H. Harpin, USA Ret of Fairfax, VA, and William C. Harpin of Boxford, MA, and five grandchildren.She was the grandmother of the late Amanda Marie Harpin.Her funeral will be held on Monday, April 19, 2004, at 10:00AM, in St. Georges Episcopal, 14 Rhode Island Avenue, Newport.
