Helen Humphrey Stone

Helen Humphrey Stone, 79, of Ayrault Street, Newport, RI, died peacefully Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at the Village House Nursing Rehabilitation Center in Newport.She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Rev. Dr. L. Edgar Stone, Jr. of Newport; two sons, Wesley D. Stone and his wife Cinda of Williamsville, NY, and William A. Stone and his wife Carolyn of Santa Fe, NM; and three grandchildren, Samantha, Hally and Taylor of Williamsville, NY.Born in Chicago, IL on July 15, 1928, she was the only child of the late Rev. Dr. Seldon B. Humphrey and Blanche Ensley Humphrey. She was raised in New Haven, CT, graduated from Pembroke College Brown University, and enjoyed a teaching career at various public schools in Newport. She sang in the choir of the United Baptist Church in Newport, where she was an active member since her 1961 arrival in Newport. She was a volunteer at Newport Hospital where, with her smile and flower delivery, brightened the days of countless patients and their families.A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 8, 2008 at 3 pm in United Baptist Church, 30 Spring Street, Newport.Burial will be private.In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to United Baptist Church, 30 Spring Street, Newport, RI 02840.
