Helena L. Chaves

Helena L. Chaves, 89, of Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Hudson, MA, passed away on June 29, 2024, in Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Herculano M. Chaves for 66 years.

Born in Santa Maria, Azores, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Joao de Chaves Loura and Maria Moreira de Sousa.

Throughout her life, Helena found joy in creating, she was extremely talented in her craft of crocheting and sewing, even making her own clothing. Her talents extended to her blooming gardens, and baking for family and friends.

One of Helena's greatest joys was traveling. She cherished visits to her homeland in the Azores and exploring new destinations on cruises. Workwise, Helena dedicated over 20 years to Data General in Southboro, MA, where she excelled as an Electrical Technician in circuit manufacturing.

Helena is survived by her husband, Herculano M. Chaves, her son; Rafael Chaves, and wife Cheryle, of Portsmouth, her daughter-in-law; Helena Chaves, her grandchildren; Alex Chaves and wife Alyssa, Brian Chaves and wife Connie, granddaughter-in-law Becky Chaves, Jason Chaves, Katelyn Sandell and husband Josh, and her great-grandchildren; Avalyn Sandell, Ethyn Chaves, Zoey Chaves, Sofia Chaves, Bree Chaves, Jameson Chaves, and Viktoriya Chaves. She additionally leaves many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Helena was preceded in death by her son, Joseph Chaves, her daughter, Lucy Chaves, her grandson, Dylan Chaves, and her sisters, Eugenia Chaves, Filomena Machado, and Maria Luz.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871, with visiting hours from 10:00-11:00 AM, immediately followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM in the Connors Funeral Home. Graveside burial services will continue in Trinity Cemetery, East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI.
