Herbert A. Martin

Tiverton, RI - Herbert A. Martin, 78, of 66 Sheldon Street, Tiverton, RI, formerly of Calais, VT, died Friday, May 18, 2007 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Marydel Chaples Martin, who passed away in 1998. Born in Calais, VT on March 20, 1929, he was the son of the late Orvis and Linnie Mae Foster Martin.Mr. Martin served in the United States Navy for 20 years, during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After his retirement from the Navy he later worked for the Maintenance Department for the Newport Housing Authority for 15 years. He also worked as a custodian and crossing guard for the school department in Montpelier, VT and was also a farmer. Mr. Martin was a member of the Bliss Four Corners Methodist Church. Herb enjoyed going out on his boat, fishing and the outdoors, but nothing made him happier than being with his family and always willing to help his friends, family and strangers. He is survived by his children, Sheila D. Robertson and her husband George of Newport, RI, Terralinda M. Winchenbach and her husband Ronald of Portsmouth, RI, Michael H. Martin of Portsmouth, RI, Kathleen Mosher and her husband Richard of Newport, RI, Sara L. Iafrate and her husband Adam of Portsmouth, RI, and Herbert A. ?Butch? Martin of Tiverton, RI, fifteen grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, his sister in-laws Stella and Alice of Vermont, many nieces, nephews and friends.He was the brother of the late Raymond Martin and Felina Getchel. His funeral will be held on Sunday, May 20, 2007, at 5:00 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial of his remains will be at a later date at the family plot in Calais, VT.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, from 3-5pm in the funeral home.
