Herculano Chaves

Herculano M. Chaves, of Portsmouth, formerly of Hudson, MA, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2025, at his home. He was the husband of the late Helena L. (Loura) Chaves.

Born in Santa Maria, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jose M. and Filomena (Monteiro) Chaves.

He emigrated to the United States and became a proud citizen. He pursued his education, earning a high school diploma, before embarking on a successful career as a sheet metal mechanic for Mainframe Computer System Manufacturing Company and Digital.

One of Herc's greatest joys was traveling, He cherished visits to his homeland in the Azores and exploring new destinations on cruises.

Interests included fishing and working in his garden. Herc was a fan of the Portuguese Soccer Team, Benfica Football, and the Boston Bruins.

Throughout his life, Mr. Chaves was known for his strong work ethic and unwavering dedication to providing for his family.

He leaves his son Rafael Chaves, and his wife Cheryle of Portsmouth. He is also survived by his brother Antonio Chaves and his wife Helen of Hudson, MA, his sister-in-law Filomena Chaves and his daughter-in-law Helen Chaves.

Herc was the grandfather of Alex Chaves and wife Alyssa, Bryan Chaves and wife Connie, granddaughter-in-law Becky Chaves, Jason Chaves, Katelyn Sandell and husband Josh as well as his great-grandchildren Avalyn Sandell, Ethyn Chaves, Zoey Chaves, Sophie Chaves, Bree Chaves, Jameson Chaves and Viktoriya Chaves. He additionally leaves many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Herc was preceded in death by his son Joseph Chaves, his daughter Lucy Chaves, his grandson Dylan Chaves and his brothers and sisters Albert Chaves, Joseph Chaves, J. Armando Chaves, Filomena Casavecchia and Maria Monteiro.

Funeral services will be held, Saturday, March 1, 2025, in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, with visiting hours from 10:00-11:00 AM, immediately followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am in the Connors Funeral Home. Graveside burial services will continue in Trinity Cemetery, East Main Road, Portsmouth.
