Homer Freeborn

Homer Freeborn, 89, of 129 Kay Street, Newport, died on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Newport Hospital after a long battle with heart disease.Homer was born in Portsmouth, RI on October 15, 1923, the son of Sarah A. (Huling) Freeborn and John S. Freeborn. He was a descendant of William Freeborn, one of the original settlers of Portsmouth.He grew up in Portsmouth and attended Rogers High School in Newport. He left high school in 1942 to enlist in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He served overseas in the South Pacific on the island of Saipan with the B29 Bomb Group; he was in charge of maintenance. He received numerous awards after the war including the "Certificate of Appreciation" from the Dept of Navy's "Transition Program"Homer was best known as the Service Manager for Bove Chevrolet in Newport, where he worked for 37 years, and retired in 1985. He received several awards from the "Only the Best Club" in recognition of his outstanding performance in Chevrolet Retail Service Management. Homer was known to be a stickler for the details and worked hard to keep all his customers satisfied.Mr. Freeborn was also an avid golfer and a lifetime member of the Green Valley Country Club, first joining in the 1970s. He also enjoyed playing cards with his wife and best friends, the late Parvos and the late Hassetts.Homer was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Besides his wife of 66 years, Mary (Briggs) Freeborn of Newport, he leaves four children, Kenneth Freeborn of Newport, Richard Freeborn of Oklahoma, Darlene and Andy Yusen of Portsmouth, Debra and Russ Spencer of Portsmouth, 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He also leaves a sister Hope Hibbad of Newport and a brother Farrel Freeborn of Somerset, MA.Calling hours will be held Tuesday, February 12 from 4:00-8:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 13 at 11:00am in the Memorial Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Middletown Four Corners Cemetery.
