Homosassa, FL - Howard Alling Spaulding, 89, of 77 Sycamore Circle, Homosassa, RI, died Sunday, October 12, 2008, at the Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of the late Evelyn C. Henke Spaulding of Oakmont, PA. Born in Monticello, NY, on June 9, 1919, he was the son of the late Dr. Ralph Lockwood and Amy Alling Spaulding.Following a distinguished career as a First Lieutenant in the 375th fighter squadron during WWII, Mr. Spaulding attended Duquesne University and received his Degree in Pharmacy. Mr. Spaulding was the owner and operator of Spauldings Pharmacy in Greeneville, PA, for over 20 years. Following his moved to Florida, he worked for various pharmacies including Eckerd. Following his retirement in 1984, he volunteered for many years in the pharmacy department at St. Judes hospital on the Island of St. Lucia. His passion was providing medicine and pharmaceutical services for the poor and underserved populations in the Islands. For his military service in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters he received the Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Mr. Spauldings leisure activities included gardening, making mission rosaries and serving his home parish as a Eucharistic minister.He is survived by a daughter Dr. Virginia Mary Spaulding of Newport, RI, two sons Dr. Theodore C. Spaulding of Chapel Hill, NC, and H. Mark Spaulding of Sterling Heights, MI, two brothers Dr. John A. Spaulding of Toms River, NJ and Ralph Spaulding of Dandridge, TN, a sister Betsy L. Kilham of Santa Fe, NM, and four grandchildren Elizabeth A. Raposa, RN, Thomas M. Feazell, JD, Jeffrey Spaulding and Rebecca Spaulding.A memorial service will be held at the 8:00am Mass on Sunday, October 26, 2008 in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport.Funeral services and burial will take place in Florida. Military Honor Guard will present Mr. Spaulding at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushenll, FL.In lie of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice serving the poor and underserved in your locale area.
