Middletown, RI - Howard L. ?Pudge? Barlow, 68, of 969 West Main Road Middletown, formerly of Briarwood Avenue, Middletown, died Monday, February 21, 2005 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.He was the husband of Sylvia A. Johnson Barlow. Born in Philadelphia, PA on February 24, 1936, he was the son of the late Howard G. and Helen P. Maher Barlow. Mr. Barlow was a Marine Engineer for McLaughlin Research Corporation and prior at American Systems Corporation of Middletown, RI and various other Marine orientated work throughout Southern New England. Mr. Barlow was a 1954 graduate of Rogers High School, where he played football, basketball, and also ran track. After graduating from Rogers he joined the United States Marines becoming a member of the Force Recon / UDT Unit and help train other Force Recon members. He played as the Center Position for the Boston Patriots in 1960 until he was injured. Mr. Barlow was a member of the Force Recon Association and the Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineers. He was a communicant of St. Lucy?s Church. Mr. Barlow was an avid reader of history and enjoyed sketching in both charcoal and pastel. Besides his wife he is survived by five sons Howard L. Barlow Jr. of Bristol, RI ; Jeffrey M. Barlow of Croton-On-Hudson, NY; Kenneth J. Barlow of Maple Grove, MN ; Kevin W. Barlow of Bath, NY and Steven P. Barlow of Newport, RI ; two brothers Robert Barlow and Stephen Barlow both of Newport, RI, two sisters Phyllis Chandler of Newport, RI, and Marion Goodgame of Slidell, LA, twelve grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.His funeral will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2005, at 8:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 AM in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.
