IRENE S. BUTLER (Lewis)"Goodnight, Irene"On January 27th, 2016 at Grand Islander Center in Middletown, Irene S. Butler (Lewis) quietly left this earth to be with her savior. She was with us for only 81years.Born in Newport, Irene attended Newport schools and graduated from Roger High School. A lifelong resident of the Point, she enjoyed the amenities of the shore and in later years on summer evenings, sat with friends and neighbors on the benches at Battery Park as the sun set across the Bay and the soft evening breezes carried their good conversation and laughter up and down Washington Street.She was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Edward J. Butler, Jr. and their son, Edward J. Butler III.After high school Irene began work as a secretary in the diet kitchen of the Newport Hospital; then after a brief foray in Washington, DC where she clerked at Health Welfare she spent several years at the Supply Dept. at the Naval Station.Irene enjoyed many a Saturday yard-sailing up and down the Island with her cousin Ruth, where she found numerous treasures, including the books she loved. She was also an avid collector of cookbooks. She was an avid reader, a writer of poetry and kept journals of her doings. Her favorite poets were Robert Burns, Walter Benton and Don Blanding. She treasured her Bible studies, her friends, her family and her Church.Irene was a loving and compassionate soul and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
