Irene Leanor Garcia

Middletown, RI - Irene Leanor (Pires) Garcia, 84, formerly of Third Street, Newport, died on Friday, July 6, 2012 at John Clarke Nursing Home Retirement Center in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Estulano Garcia with whom she shared 52 years of marriage till his passing in April 2003. Born in Faial, the Azores, on August 13, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Joao and Rosa Pires and immigrated to the United States in October of 1959 along with her family settling in Newport, RI.Irene worked as a presser at the former Egan's Laundry for many years. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church. She was best known among her friends and family for her beautiful crochet work. She enjoyed cooking, tending to her flower gardens and spending time with her family.She is survived by her son, Manuel E. Garcia and his wife Maria of Middletown, RI, her two daughters, Maria L. Carreiro and her husband Russell of Westport, MA and Elizabeth M. Dill and her husband Donald of Warner, NH; five loving granddaughters, Christina Alves of Tiverton, RI and Columbus, OH, Lisa Garcia of Middletown, RI and Rachael, Natalie and Helen Dill of Warner, NH; two great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Maria de Gloria, Jose, Joao, and Manuel Pires and Rosa Pires Silveria. Calling hours are omitted and burial will be private in St. Columba Cemetery.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 9, 2012 at 9:30 am in St. Joseph's Church, Broadway at Mann Avenue, Newport.Donations in her memory may be made to the John Clarke Activities Fund, 600 Valley Road, Middletown, RI 02842 or to Odyssey Vistacare, 2374 Post Road, Suite 206, Warwick, RI 02882.Irene's family wishes to thank the staff at John Clarke for their compassionate care shown to "Vo".
