J Martin Douglas

J Martin Douglas, 67, beloved son of Gwen Douglas and the Late William Douglas of London, England died on Saturday, January 24, 2015.He had both British and American nationality. From an early age sailing was his favorite hobby. Martin was an accomplished sailor and a licensed captain and he spent most of his adult life in the charter yacht business in both the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Later, he settled in Newport where he worked in the marine industry. As a knowledgeable marine electrical engineer, he worked for several firms installing electronic equipment in new and refitted yachts. For several years he was the chief engineer for Shamrock V, owned by the Museum of Yachting. Martin was active in the Friends of the Waterfront and was an advocate for preserving the maritime character of Newport.Martin leaves his mother, Gwen Douglas, his cousins, Lorna Roberts and Heather Altland de Diaz, all of England, and his cousin, Dot Russell of Australia.Calling hours will be held on Monday, February 23, 2015, from 9-10am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, followed by a service at 10.Burial will take place in Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Robert Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport RI 02840 or the Seaman's Church Institute, Americas Cup Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
