James A. Harvey

Portsmouth, RI - James A. Harvey, of 43D Glen Meade Drive, Portsmouth , RI, died on Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Irene Lightfine Harvey. Born in Bluff City, AK, on August 24, 1916, he was the son of the late James Isaac and Lucy Lee Barlow Harvey. Mr. Harvey served in the United States Navy for 20 years. During World War II, he was a survivor of the sinking of both the USS Langley and USS Pecos. He retired as a Chief Warrant Officer in 1954. After his career in the Navy, he worked as a Westinghouse engineer for 20 years, traveling throughout the United States and the world. He was a member of the Yangtze China Patrol, a collection of Pacific Theater veterans and he was a member of the Portsmouth Senior Citizens Center. During his post-retirement years, Mr. Harvey traveled with his wife to every state in the continental United States.Besides his wife of 62 years, he is survived by his sons James Harvey Jr., of Portsmouth, RI, and Douglas Harvey of Long Lake, NJ, his daughters Jean Fidyk of Clifton, VA, and Barbara Haeck of Eaton Rapids, MI, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was the father of the late Keith Harvey.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2006, from 6-8 in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, July 31, 2006, at 12:30pm in Trinity Cemetery, East Main Road, Portsmouth.Donations in his memory may be made to the Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Dept.
