Newport, - James Allen Trefethen Sr., 72, formerly of Newport, and the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol, RI, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Veterans Medical Center Providence, RI.. Born in Exeter, NH on September 3, 1931, he was the son of the late Ralph and Emma Leona Sprague Smith. Mr. Trefethen had served in the US Navy, for over 23 years as a First Class Petty Officer. He had served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After his retirement from the US Navy, he worked at the Newport Shipyard. He then went to work at the Navy Yard in Portsmouth, NH. Mr. Trefethen had also worked in the automotive department at K-Mart in Rochester, NH. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. He is survived by two sons James Allen Trefethen Jr. of Bristol, RI, and Mark L. Trefethen of Newport, RI, two daughters Jessica L. Trefethen of Littleton, NH, and Carlene D. Willis of Newport, RI, one sister Joan Carr of Portsmouth, NH, 5 Grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Ralph Smith, Donald Smith, and Carlene Trefethen.Relatives and friends will be received in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, Sunday afternoon from 12 noon ? 2pm. A private burial will take place in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter, RI
