Tiverton, RI - James Edward Leary, Jr., 81, of 628 Park Avenue, Portsmouth passed from this life Thursday, January 4, 2007. Born in Fall River, MA on January 5, 1925, he was the son of the late James and Evelyn Quirk Leary. Jim enlisted in the Army on February 17th 1943 and then enlisted in the Air Force on October 12th 1945. He served in World War II and the Korean Conflict, retiring as Tech Sergeant on July 31st 1963. He then worked 10 yrs in civil service at the Newport Naval Base. Jim truly enjoyed his retirement, spending it with his friends in Island Park, cheering the Red Sox on each year and being a wonderful grandfather to his grandchildren. He was a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts and coached Little League in Portsmouth. Jim is survived by his four children, Cynthia Leary-Johnson and son in law Richard of Portsmouth, Kathleen Leary of Windsor, CT, James E. Leary III of Huntington Beach, CA and John W. Leary and daughter in law Donna Timberlake of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Stephanie Meyer, Bryan and Ellen Leary, Yvonne and Joseph Geraghty; five great grandchildren and his beloved dog, Sarge. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Myrtle L. Leary, brothers Richard and Edward Leary, a sister Patricia Sherwood and grandson Robert C. Meyer III. Jim?s wishes were for no services upon his death, family and friends will be joining together for a private celebration of his life.
