James Edward Sawyer, Sr

James Edward Sawyer Sr., age 77, of Newport died Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Newport Hospital of Newport, RI. Mr. Sawyer was born June 4, 1938, in Newport, RI, the son of the late Lester O'Connell and the late Mary E (Goffe) Sawyer. He was the husband of Nancy E. (Michaud) Sawyer for 53 years. Mr. Sawyer honorably served in the US Navy. He primarily worked as a welder for 40 years, first for Tom Crawford, and later for Da-Mar Iron Works. He also worked for nearly 15 years as a security guard for the Newport Bay Club. He was an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan and enjoyed playing pool and cards in his spare time.Besides his wife, he is survived by his three children, Elizabeth Sawyer of Newport, RI, James E. Sawyer, Jr. of Tiverton, RI, and Jennifer Sawyer of Newport, RI, his sister: Joan Sawyer Marks of Newport, RI, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.He was predeceased by his daughter, Joan Goodrow, and his brother, Stanley Sawyer.Calling hours will take place on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, from 4:00-7:00pm, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.His burial will be private.Contributions towards his funeral services will be graciously accepted by his family and may be forwarded to the funeral home.
