Middletown, RI - James G. Chase, JR. 78, of 739 Forest Park, Middletown, RI, formerly of Newport, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at home. He was the husband of Hilda E. Monks Chase of Newport. Born in Newport, RI on July 7, 1929, he was the son of the late James G. and Thelma Booth Chase.Mr. Chase grew up in the 5th Ward in Newport. He served in the United States Navy, retiring after 22 years of service. After his retirement, Mr. Chase worked as a head gardener for various Newport estates, including the Firestone and Von Bulow estates, as well as the Preservation Society of Newport. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the All-Vets and the Preservation Society. Mr. Chase loved fishing, hunting, swimming and gardening. And loved to have coffee with his daughter. He also loved his cats. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughter Karen Chase of Newport, RI, his brother Robert A. Chase of Middletown, RI and his close friends Phyllis Paquette and Michelle Botelho.He was the father of the late John James Chase and the brother of the late John Clifford Chase, Jack Chase and Howard Chase. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at 10:00am in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
