Middletown, RI - Lt. James Joseph Manning, Jr., Ret., Newport Police 92, formerly of 7 Mumford Avenue, Newport, RI, died on Saturday, September 06, 2008 at St. Clare Home in Newport. He was the husband of the late Lillian M. Davison Manning. Born in Newport, RI on November 10, 1915, he was the son of the late James Joseph and Bridget Fogarty Manning. Lieutenant Manning served as a police officer for the Newport Police Department for 25 years, retiring in 1966. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy for police officers. After his retirement from the police department, he went to work for the Newport Housing Authority for 10 years in the maintenance department. He remained active with the Newport Fraternal Order of Police for many years through his retirement, volunteering his time with the Newport Police Relief, the RI State FOP, and in delivering holiday food baskets locally to the needy. He is survived by his children, Joyce M. Derosier of Hudson, MA, Richard Tim Manning and his wife Judy of Lutz, FL, David J. Manning, Sr. of Newport, RI and Colleen A. Brito of Colchester, VT, ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.His funeral will be held on Thursday, September 11 at 8:00am, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am, in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 10, from 2-4 and 6-9, in the funeral home.
