Portsmouth, RI - James L. Cayer, 63, of 54 Maize Corn Road, Portsmouth, RI, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Catherine L. Sylvia Cayer. Born in Pawtucket, RI on October 22, 1944, he was the son of the late Louis J. and Eileen Hall Cayer.Mr. Cayer graduated from Cumberland High School and then from U.R.I. in 1967. He retired from NUWC Newport Division in 1999 after 38 years. Mr. Cayer Was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church and a Eucharistic Minister. He volunteered at the Robert Potter League for Animals and also drove for Meals on Wheels. Mr. Cayer used to video tape the Portsmouth Town Council and School Committee meetings for Cox Television. In his spare time he loved to travel with his wife around the country having been in 49 states and most of the National Parks. Besides his wife of 29 years, he is survived by his stepchildren, Laurie A. Fischer and her husband Robert of Dracut, MA and Eric A. Soares and his wife Helena of Middletown, RI, his grandchildren, Dustin A. Soares of Middletown, RI and Caitlin R. Fischer of Dracut, MA and his sister Jean M. Lynch and her husband John of Northwood, NH. His funeral will be held on Monday, April 28, 2008, at 9:00 am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2008, from 2-5 in the funeral home.
