James Allan Martland, 83, died Saturday, August 4, 2012 at home surrounded by his family. Mr. Martland was born February 10, 1929 in Newport, RI. He is the son of the late James and Jeanette (Allan) Martland of Newport. He was the loving husband of Lenore (Sheehan) Martland. He graduated from Rogers High school at the age of 16. He then attended St George's for two years from where also graduated. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War being discharged with the rank of Captain. Then he graduated from Brown University with a degree in English. He worked in the Newport School Department for 28 years, first as an English teacher at Thompson Junior High and Rogers High School and later became the Dean of Boys at Rogers High. Always the avid athlete, he played football and baseball in high school. One of the proudest times of his life was being captain on the football team of Brown University. He became the paddleball champion of Newport and also won many tennis matches in the Newport City tournaments. While at Rogers, he was an assistant football coach with John Toppa. They won many state championships during their years together. In his youth, he was a life guard at Hazards Beach and First Beach. He was inducted into the St George's Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Newport Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. Later in life, he started playing golf which he really enjoyed.He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lenore "Nonie" Martland , his son Mark Martland and his wife, Susan, of Marblehead, MA., two daughters: Lisa Neitzey and her husband, Philip, of Little Compton, RI and Christine Cassidy and her husband, Christopher, of Middletown, RI. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Graham of Portsmouth, RI and three grandchildren, Amelia O'Connor and her husband Kevin of New York, NY, Alex Martland of Boston, MA and Emily Cassidy of Middletown, RI.Jim was a loving and devoted husband and father. Besides his family, he loved football, golf, the beach and spending countless hours laughing and telling jokes with friends on "Sully's Porch". He also enjoyed bike riding with "Nonie" and dancing. Calling hours will be held on, Tuesday, August 7, 2012 from 4pm-7pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. The memorial service will be Wednesday, August 8, at 11:00am in Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, 465 Brown's Lane in Middletown, RI.
