Newport, - James McNarney Conway, 71, of 50 Ayrault Street Newport, formerly of Chicago, IL., died Friday, November 21, 2003 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI. He was the husband of Anita Walter Conway. Born in Chicago, IL on Feb. 1, 1932, he was the son of the late Thomas James Conway and Marie Sullivan Conway. Mr. Conway was a Graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in 1955, Mr. Conway served the Navy for thirty years. Beginning his career aboard a surface ship, Mr. Conway went on to graduate from Submarine School in 1957. He then served on various submarines, earned a Masters Degree in Operations research, and assumed command of the USS DOGFISH in 1970. Following sea duty, Mr. Conway worked at the Pentagon, was an Exchange Officer in the Royal Navy Submarine Attack Squadron, attended the Naval War College, and then returned to the Pentagon as Head of Strategic Analysis in OP60. In 1980, he assumed command of the USS AJAX. San Diego, CA He concluded his Navy Career at the Naval War College as an instructor and the Dean of Academics. After retiring in the Navy in 1985, he led the Newport office of Sonalyst, Inc. and then went on to manage the office of SIR, Inc. In pursuit of a lifelong dream, Mr. Conway returned to school to complete his teaching credential and taught math and Physics for several years, In addition to his family and work life, Mr. Conway was active in the community serving as Top of the Hill President, USNA Newport Chapter President, and on St.Peters Lutheran Church Council. He was a member of the Reading Room, Victorian Military Society, Norman Bird Sanctuary, NWC Foundation, James L. Maher Center, The Redwood Library and Newport Art Museum. He is survived by his wife Anita Conway of Newport, RI, two sons Kenneth Walter Conway of Middletown, RI, and Stephen Joseph Conway of Washington, DC, two daughters Jean Conway Orth of Morganhill, CA, and Camille Conway Naughton of Atlanta, GA, his brother Thomas J. Conway of Columbus, OH, his sister Kathryn Conway Gaudette of Chicago, IL, and six Grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003 at 10:00 am in St. Peters Lutheran Church, 525 Broadway, Newport.
