James P. Campbell

James P. Campbell, 89, of Warner Place, Newport, passed away on December 31, 2011 with his loving family by his side.He was the husband of 38 years to Beverly Mooney Campbell.Born on June 20, 1922 in Cambridge, MA, he was the son of the late James P. and Gladys Slade Campbell. Mr. Campbell was a 22 veteran of the United States Navy serving during WWII and Korea as a Boatswains Mate. He served aboard the USS Huntington, the USS AM. Sumner, the USS Salem, the USS Boston, the USS Mississinewa and the USS Arikara.Following retirement from the Navy, he worked for many years at the Bowling Alley at the Newport Naval Base. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve and a member of St. Marys Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. He enjoyed furniture making, antique refinishing and gardening. Many people would often stop by to admire his many beautiful rose bushes. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Melissa OBrien and Jennifer OBrien Lombardo, both of Newport, RI; four grandchildren, Christopher Glassie, Rayna Lombardo, Jennifer Conover and Melissa Smith; a great-grandson, Connor Smith; three brothers, David Campbell and his wife Donna of Revere, MA, Norman Campbell of Lowell, MA, and Andrew Campbell and his wife Helen of East Billerica, MA; a sister, Lois Carter of Surry, NH; and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Bruce DeCosta.His funeral will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 9:45 am from Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, with a burial service at 11 am in St. Marys Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. Burial with military honors will follow in Middletown Cemetery, corner of Wyatt Avenue and Turner Road, Middletown, RI.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 from 4-7 pm in the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VNS Hospice of Newport Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or to the Building Fund of St. Marys Episcopal Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
