James Randall Ray, Jr., 62, of 136 Old Mill Lane, Portsmouth, RI, died unexpectedly Thursday, October 2, 2008, at home. He was the husband of Marlene Lopes Ray.Born in Newport, RI, on September 23, 1946, he was the son of the late James Randall and Sarah Saunders Ray.Mr. Ray had worked for the Newport Police Department beginning as an Officer, then as a Juvenile Detective, and retiring as a Sergeant after 25 years. He was a Graduate of Salve Regina University and had attended Johnson and Wales College. For a short time before the Police Department, he was a security guard at Raytheon. After retiring from the Police Department, Jim drove the bus for the RIDE Program for the James L. Maher Center for the last 9 years. He was a member of the FOP, the All Vets, the Friendly Sons of Newport, and was a Past Master of the Stone Mill Lodge #3. Mr. Ray loved fishing; some of his favorite spots were on the Goat Island Causeway and along Ocean Drive. Mr. Ray was also a horse and dog lover, especially German Shepherds.Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter Carol L. Ray Medina of Newport, RI, two sons Howard A. Ray of Newport, RI, and James R. Ray III of Portsmouth, RI, two grandchildren Natasha L. Ray Thomas and Howard A. Ray Thomas, and two great grandchildren Julious X. Santiago and Nyla A. Santiago, and a brother Wellington W. Ray of Portsmouth, RI,.His funeral will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, from 6-9 p.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home.
