NEWPORT, RI - Jane A. McManus, 76, of Blenheim-Newport, Valley Road, Middletown, RI formerly of 7 Elliot Place, Newport, died Monday, January 2, 2006 at home. Born in Newport, Rhode Island on March 30, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Jane Fish McManus.Ms. McManus was a graduate of Newport Schools and Salve Regina College. After completing her secretarial proficiency certification at Katherine Gibbs, she began her professional career as a secretary to local attorney A.L. Greenberg. Jane McManus, CMC dutifully served the City of Newport for 43 years in various capacities, most prominently as the Newport City Clerk for 18 years. She was hired by the City of Newport on July 14, 1953 as a clerk stenographer for the City Clerk?s Office. She remained in that position until her promotion to Executive Secretary to the City Manager in August 1956. She then worked as the Deputy City Clerk from 1971 to 1977. Ms. McManus was appointed Newport City Clerk on May 1, 1978 where she served until her retirement in July 1996. During her tenure as City Clerk Ms. McManus received numerous awards and professional accredidations inlcluding certification by the New England Regional Municipal Institute in August 1980; a Certificate of Award: Principles Procedures for Running Meetings for Local Government as well as letters of appreciation from The Newport Outdoor Art Festival, Women?s Equality Day Rally, the New Visions of Newport County, and many from local business and private residents, as well as recognition by the RI Attorney General?s Office.In 1982 Ms. McManus was selected to be the ?Women of The Year? by the Women?s Division of the Newport Chamber of Commerce and received numerous resolutions and proclamations from the Governor, City Council, Secretary of State, and Senator Claiborne Pell.In addition to her professional career, she was a member of several civic and community organizations. She was active with the Newport Historical Society, the Boys and Girls Club of Newport County, the Newport Music Festival, and the Newport Public Library. She also served as vice president of the Newport Branch of the RI Town and City Clerks Association. She is survived by her brother Charles H. McManus, a nephew Albert T. McManus and his wife Liz Greenfield of Floresville, TX, and several nieces and nephews.She is preceded in death by her brothers Richard F., George E. and Albert T. McManus.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2006 at 9:00AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00AM in St. Josephs Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport.Burial will be in St. Columbas Cemetery in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 6, 2006 from 6-9PM in the Memorial Funeral Home.Memorial donations may be made to Robert Potter League For Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
