Middletown, RI - Janet N. Allen, 81, of 303 Valley Road, Middletown, RI, died Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. Born in Rocky River, OH, on November 24, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edward and Jessie Inghaus Allen.Ms. Allen graduated from Avon Village High School on May 27, 1948, the Elyria Memorial Hospital School of Nursing on September 19, 1952, passed her nursing boards in Ohio and was admitted as a registered nurse on January 23, 1953. Janet entered active duty in the United Sates Navy Nurse Corps on October 25, 1959 and continued her education received a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Washington on August 21, 1964, and became a Commander of the USN Nurse Corps on August 1, 1972. After a lengthy career in the Navy she retired from active duty in November of 1979. She received service awards and commendations including; the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Cross of Gallantry. Janet served as Chapter Treasurer of the Military Order of the World Wars, she volunteered over nine years as an American Red Cross Volunteer at the Naval Ambulatory Care Center, Pharmacy Dept. of Newport, RI, she received a certificate of appreciation for the Retired Officers Association, was the recipient of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution award for military service during the Vietnam War and was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Ms. Allen was active in the Portsmouth United Methodist Church where she was a member of the church choir, and she was an avid reader. Janet lived in her home on Lisa Terrace in Portsmouth for over thirty years, and then moved to an apartment in Blenheim three years ago where she was very active in the many activities including the book club and music groups. Janet was the youngest of seven children. She is survived by her sister Harriet Allen Jackson and several nephews and nieces of Ohio. She was predeceased by her twin sister who died shortly after birth, and her brothers, Glenn Allen, Charles Allen, Leslie Allen and Morris Allen.Her funeral will be held on Saturday, February 18, at 11 am, at Portsmouth United Methodist Church, 2732 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
