Portsmouth, RI - Jay E. Eckhardt Britton, 65, of 319 Fischer Circle, Portsmouth, RI, died on Sunday, April 13, 2008, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. She was the wife of Johnnie John W. Britton of Rindge, NH. Born in Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C. on January 9, 1943, she was the daughter of Margaret Jay Eckhardt of Rockport, TX, and the late MG George Stafford Eckhardt.Mrs. Britton was a descendant of John Jay the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. She received a Finance Degree from George Mason University and her MBA from Salve Regina University, graduating the same year as her son. Mrs. Britton worked at the Navy Federal Credit Union as a Mortgage Broker for 25 years. Jay was a generous philanthropist, donating her time and money to many organizations throughout the years and was also a breeder of Champion Weimaraner Dogs. Besides her husband of 44 years and her mother, she is survived by her sons Johnny William Britton, III and his wife Leslie S. of Pagosa Springs, CO, and Jeffrey Jay Britton and his wife Mary L. of Harkor Heights, TX, her brother George S. Eckhardt of Houston, TX, and her grandchildren, Jeffrey Taylor Britton, Keegan Britton and twins Kelsey and Tyler BrittonFuneral services will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2008, at 10:30am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, from 5-8 p.m. in the funeral home.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, 02871.
