NEWPORT - Jean M.Cozzens Peckham, 78, of 36 Ellery Road, Newport, RI, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family, Thursday, September 28, 2006. She was the wife of Julian Overton Grass Peckham for 52 years. Born in Newport, RI on September 26, 1928, Jean was the daughter of the late Maclyn and Edith Cozzens. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 70 years, teaching Sunday School, serving on the Board of Deacons, and frequently acting as Chairwoman of the yearly Mother/Daughter Church Banquet. Jean was also a Girl Scout Leader and Junior Advisor during the 1960s. Jean graduated from Rogers High School in 1947 and the Community College of Rhode Island in 1993 with an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. She worked for Dr. P.O. Baumgartner for 20 years as office manager, and Jasper and Bailey Sailmakers for 13 years as office manager and bookkeeper, retiring in March of 2006.Jean lived a fulfilling and happy life surrounded by her family and friends. She touched many lives with her kindness and caring, and will be fondly missed and always remembered for her generous heart and giving ways to all who had the pleasure of being a part of her life. Besides her husband, she leaves her children Sandra E.Woodward of Ft. Myers, FL, Nancy A. Gleason of Union, ME, and Cynthia J. Peckham, of Mystic CT; her granchildren Erika M. Scimeca, Amanda J. Stansell, Sarah E. Woodward, Joshua J. Woodward, Michael P. Hayes, and Emily E. Dutra; two great grandchildren Bryant Scimeca and Nathanial Scimeca, a sister Elizabeth Bette DelNero of Newport, and brother Alexander Sandy Cozzens of Portsmouth, RI. She was also the sister of the late John Robert Bob Cozzens of Portsmouth. Jean also leaves several nieces and nephews and many cherished friends.Calling hours will be Sunday, October 1, 2006 from 4-7 p.m. at Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Avenue in Newport with funeral services at First Presbyterian Church, Broadway and Everett Street, Newport on Monday, October 2, 2006 at 11 am.Flowers are welcome and donations in Jeans memory may be made to Home and Hospice Care of RI, 169 George Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860.
