Jean Muriel Thurston Mcgowan

Jean Muriel Thurston McGowan, 94, formally of Middletown, RI passed away peacefully at St. Clare Home in Newport, RI, on February 9, 2024.
Jean was born in Newport, RI on August 16, 1929, to the late Howard and Florence (Murphy) Thurston. She was the sister of the late Vivian L. Silvia. She is predeceased by her husband of 36 years, George W. McGowan and her son, Roy T. McGowan. She leaves behind her daughter-in-law, Toni Lyn McGowan, three grandchildren, Kyle, Katie, Ben McGowan, and a niece Karen L. Silvia.
Jean graduated from Rogers High School and Bryant College. She went on to work at Newport Electric Corporation for many years until the birth of her son.
Jean was a devoted, loving wife and dedicated mother-always putting family first. She was a long-time member of Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club. She enjoyed socializing and playing a friendly but competitive game of golf with all of the friends that she had made at the course over the years. She took her love of the game and taught her son as well as her grandchildren to play.
Jean was a newspaper carrier for The Newport Daily News for many years. She delivered papers to the Grand Islander Nursing Home and the John Clarke Senior Living Center. She enjoyed daily conversations with the residents and took a genuine interest in their lives.
Jean's fondest memories of her youth was growing up on the Thurston Farm, in Portsmouth where horseback riding and spending time with the animals made her the happiest. Jean's love and fondness for animals continued throughout her life. She had many pets, nurturing stray animals that would surprisingly arrive in her yard, even a seagull which visited daily.
Later in life, she was happiest as Grammy. She never missed an opportunity to play a game or just spend time with her family.
Her kind spirit will be missed. Her family is extremely grateful for the love and care that she received at St. Clare Home.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 26, 2024, at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of St. Columba Catholic Cemetery, 465 Browns Lane, Middletown, RI.
