Jean Smith

Middletown, RI - L. Jean Smith, 84, of Middletown, died Saturday, November 23, 2013 at John Clarke Health Care Center Middletown, RI. She was the wife of the late Robert Smith. Born in Newport, RI on Mar. 18, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Issac Clarke and Genevieve (Murphy) Clarke. Jean loved doing crafts and antiquing, and loved gardening and baking. During the holidays, she would spend many hours in the kitchen baking cookies and candies for her family. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and loved her time spent with her grandchildren. They were her pride and joy. She worked for the State hot lunch program in Newport for many years and later at the Newport Hospital cafeteria. She will be missed by many. She is survived by her children Barry Smith and his wife Debbie of Middletown, RI and Ft. Myers, FL, Linda Smith and her companion Raymond Whalley of Middletown, RI, Brian Smith and his wife Kimberly of Middletown, RI. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michele Smith, Amy Quintal, Dr.Jeana Atkins, Ryan Smith, Lauren Smith, and Colin Smith. Jean was also expecting her first great-grandchild in March. Jean was the sister of the late Thomas, Kenneth, Wally, and Russell "Candyman" Clarke. She was also the sister of the late Genevieve Copsey, Beatrice Echola, Phyllis Bowley and Florence Clarke. Calling hours will be held on Friday November 29, 2013 from 4-7 pm in the Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway Newport, RI Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 30, 2013, at 9:00am from the funeral home with a funeral service at 10:00 am in Trinity Church 1 Queen Anne Square in Newport.
