NEWPORT - Jeraldine Jeri Mello, of Houston Avenue, Newport, RI, born June 20, 1924 in Malden, MA, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013 from complications of diabetes.Jeraldine was the daughter of the late Elmer and Eliza Joseph.She was educated in Malden, MA and was a professional dancer and vocalist on the RKO circuit, entertaining in theaters and nightclubs throughout New England. During WWII she performed for troops with the USO. Jeri came to Newport in 1945 and became the Mistress of Ceremonies at the Atlantic Beach Club, then known as the Terrace Club.In 1947, she married Frank Joseph Mello (deceased) and is survived by four children; CDR Gerald Mello USN (ret), Dr. Wendy Glassman, PhD., of Huntington, NY, Janis Mello of Newport, and Lisa Sousa of Portsmouth. Another son, Frank Skip Mello predeceased her in February 2010. Jeri was the grandmother of LCDR Brian Mello of Virginia Beach, VA, Christopher Mello of Bristol, RI, and Gregory Glassman, of Huntington, NY. Her 3 great-grandchildren in Virginia Beach, Haxton, Evelyn and Samson will miss her greatly.Jeri was active in the Trigon Club, often singing and dancing in the gala events. In 1969, she was employed by the Hilton, and remained through the many hotel changes (Sheraton, Hyatt, Doubletree) on Goat Island. Jeris personality was a perfect match for her 35 plus years as a concierge.Jeraldine will be remembered by many names; Jeri, Auntie Jeri, NuNu, GiGi, Grandma, MaMa Mello and Mom.
