Portsmouth, RI - Jerry M. Cates, 64, of Portsmouth, RI, died suddenly on Monday, October 8, 2007 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of 21 years to Karen Cates and father of James M. Cates of Boston, MA and Jeremiah T. Cates of Newport. Born in Oklahoma on Feb. 16, 1943, he was the son of the late Maurice L. and Dorothy Harris Cates. Upon graduation from high school and after attending junior college, he entered the US Navy, serving his country for four years.In 1975 Jerry graduated from Oklahoma State University where he received a degree in veterinary medicine.In 1976, Dr. Cates moved to Aquidneck Island and began his career as a veterinarian. In 1987, Dr. Cates entered into private practice to better serve the residents of Newport County opening Cates Animal Clinic in Middletown at the time. Dr. Cates also donated numerous hours of his time to various organizations, particularly the Robert Potter League for Animals.Jerry was an accomplished bowler at Aquidneck Lanes for many years, having bowled over 30 sanctioned 300 games in his career. He traveled extensively to participate in tournaments as well as finding time to coach bowlers of all ages. He was especially active in the junior bowling programs on Aquidneck Island. He was an avid country music fan, traveling to many festivals and events with his wife.One of his most important accomplishments in life was watching his two sons grow up to be fine young men.As were his wishes, services will be private and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
