Jesse Joseph Moniz, 79, of 182 Newport Avenue, Middletown, RI, entered into eternal peace on Friday, February 2, 2007, surrounded by his family, in the home he built 50 years ago, after a long, courageous battle with colon, thyroid, and prostate cancer. He was the husband of Mary E. Viera Moniz, and the former husband of the late Alice Guthrie Moniz.Born in Portsmouth on March 28, 1927, he was the son of the late Joseph F. Moniz and Maria Pacheco Moniz Garcia. He attended St. Mary?s Grammar School in Newport.He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy and earning the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theatre Medal. He was employed by Lincourts Auto Body in Newport, and then the Newport Daily News as the assistant Composing Room foreman, where he retired after 41 years. He loved antiques, flea markets and auctions, where in the past he worked with Harold Whitmarsh and Mike Corcoran.He also restored and fixed antique clocks and had an extensive collection of antique and miniature clocks. After his retirement, he would often be seen ?people watching? on Broadway or enjoying the view from King?s Park.He is survived by his wife of 33 years and five children, Stephen A. Moniz of Barrington, Pamela A. Botelho of Middletown, John P. Del Toro of McDonough, GA, Lisa F. Ripa of Richmond Hill, GA, and Jennifer K. Mays of Tiverton, nineteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He leaves behind four sisters, Gloria Medeiros, Ethel Crotteau, Olive Escobar of Newport, and Evelyn Santos of Middletown, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Emily Lowden, Mary T. Warner, Grace Perry, and Joseph Moniz.His funeral will be held with military honors on Wednesday, February 7, at 8:00 a.m. from the Hambly Funeral Home, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport.
