Jessie N. Davis, 91, of 14 Keeher Ave, Newport, RI, passed away at home on Saturday, June 4, 2011. She was the loving wife of George B. Davis for 68 years.Born in Kerrimuir, Scotland on October 6, 1919, she came to America as a babe in arms and essentially lived most of her life in Newport. She was the daughter of the late Jemima Neilson and William Neilson and the sister of the late George Neilson.She attended public schools in Newport; then worked for awhile as a household servant for an estate on Gibbs Avenue before becoming the governess and part of the travelling entourage for John Nicolas Brown, then the richest baby in the world. She then served as a dining room maid for Mr. Robert Morris of the Malbourne Estate. She was also employed by the Coit Studios as a colorist for portraits. After her marriage to George Davis, she shifted her affiliation from the Emmanuel Church to the First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School for twenty years, served as the church secretary, and was actively involved in many church related functions and groups, holding many different positions of responsibility.She is survived by her husband, her son William Davis of Newport, her daughters Lynn Dolanch of Washington, PA, and Susan Kyle of Moore, SC, seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.Flowers and donations are not requested or necessary.Calling hours will be held Monday, June 6, 2011, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 7, at 11:00am in the Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
