James Anthony Devine, 84, of Tiverton, Rhode Island, and Vero Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, surrounded by his wife and daughter.
Born and raised in Quincy, Massachusetts, Jim was the eldest child of Audrey and Tony Devine. He was predeceased by his beloved son, Eric Devine; his sister, Patricia Devine Johnson of Deland, Florida; his brother, William Devine of Westport, Massachusetts; and his sister-in-law, Theresa Devine.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Ann Sandra Devine, of Tiverton, Rhode Island, and Vero Beach, Florida; his daughter, Danielle Devine Scipione, and son-in-law, Ryan Scipione of Portland, Maine; and two cherished granddaughters, Eva and Hartley, who brought him endless joy. He is also survived by his niece Patricia Devine, nephews Grant and John Devine, and cousins and friends who will forever remember his kindness and love.
He attended Quincy High School along with his siblings. He played baseball and had the opportunity to go to the majors. Instead, he chose to attend Boston College, and then served in the Coast Guard for six years. In the 1980s, he moved with his family from Rhode Island to Miami, Florida, to be closer to his sister Patricia Johnson and her husband. He was later joined by his Italian mother-in-law Eva Pantalena of Providence, Rhode Island. After living in Vero Beach for years, he moved with his wife Ann to Tiverton, Rhode Island, where he spent summers with his young family before moving to Florida.
For many years, Jim worked in commercial real estate, specializing in mobile homes and RV parks. His hard work and expertise earned him the respect of colleagues and clients alike. Beyond his professional success, Jim was a man of simple pleasures, finding peace and joy in clamming, playing cards, and swimming in the ocean. Above all, he was deeply committed to ensuring his son and daughter received the best education and always put that first.
Jim will be remembered for his generosity, unwavering determination, and deep love for his family. Jim would always say to his children before tucking them in at night, “See you when I get there.”
A Remembrance Mass will be held at noon on Saturday, February 22, at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 74 Simmons Road, in Little Compton, Rhode Island. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of one’s choice in Jim’s honor.
He will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
