Joan Clarice Johnson

Joan Clarice (Coop) Johnson, 89, formerly of Potomac Road, Portsmouth, RI, died on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at the Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown, RI.She was the wife of the late John Johnson.Born in Dayton, OH on September 19, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Florence H. (Clark) Coop.Mrs. Johnson moved to England as an infant and after growing-up there, she returned to the United States after her marriage in 1951. She worked as a secretary in a counseling office in Middletown for many years. Mrs. Johnson was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Newport, RI. She will always be remembered for her green thumb, her beautiful garden and as a warm host to the neighborhood. She was forever English.She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Karen Johnson of Springfield, VA; her sister, Mary Tennant and her husband, James, of England; her grandchildren, John Johnson and Julie Hulley; and her nephews, James and Robert Tennant.She was preceded in death by her son, John Christopher Johnson. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, January 10, 2015 from 9-10 am in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, with a funeral service in the funeral home at 10 am.Burial will be private.Memorial donations may be made to The Humane Society (www.humanesociety.org)
