Joanne Borden Glancy (87), born on April 20, 1928 in Lynn, MA, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Newport, RI, after a lengthy illness. She was the daughter of the late Philip and Sarah (Varrell) Borden, of Marblehead, MA and Greenwich, CT. She was a direct descendant of Phillip Shearman (Sherman) and John Walker, founders of Portsmouth, RI and John Coggeshall, a founder of Portsmouth and Newport, RI. She also was a direct descendant of several of the 'Mayflower' passengers, including Richard Warren, Francis Cooke, Stephen Hopkins, John Alden Priscilla Mullins. From these ancestors, her lineage includes the Bordens of Fall River, MA. She attended Swampscott and Marblehead schools and graduated from Marblehead High School in 1946 as one of the valedictorians of her class. She then graduated from Connecticut College for Women in 1950 with a degree in Mathematics. Subsequently, she was employed in New York City by Mutual Insurance Company as an actuarial assistant. In February 1952, she married Ensign Thomas J. Glancy Jr. and embarked on a thirty-year experience as a navy officer's wife. This included living in California, Hawaii, Washington State, Virginia, Maryland and Rhode Island. Upon her husband's retirement in 1982, they settled in Middletown, RI. She worked at Grand Islander Health Care Center for several years as an evening receptionist and retired so that she could travel and visit her grandchildren. She was a devoted wife and mother, often serving as a single parent when her husband was deployed. She was a good friend of Lois W. for 40 years. She was a member of the United Congregational Church and was active in church affairs until the onset of her illness. She enjoyed traveling, crossword and logic puzzles and knitting. Joanne is survived by her husband of 63 years, Tom, her son Robert Glancy and his wife Mary of Centennial, CO, her daughter Barbara Pease and her husband Bill of Arlington, VA, her son James Glancy and his wife Cheri of Santa Cruz, CA, and her son John Glancy of Middletown, RI, her four grandchildren, Sarah Glancy of Honolulu, HI, Stephen Glancy of Poughkeepsie, NY, Kaylyn Glancy and Timothy Glancy both of Santa Cruz, CA. She is also survived by her brother Bradford Borden and his wife Mimi of North Stonington, CT, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins. Funeral arrangements are being made through Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. Calling hours are 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday June 25, 2015. A memorial service will be held at the United Congregational Church at 10:00 AM on Friday June 26, 2015. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veteran's Cemetery in Exeter, RI. The family wishes to thank the staff of Village House for Joanne's outstanding care during her illness.
