Middletown, RI - Joaquin Jack Mello, 68, of 477 Turner Road, Middletown, RI, died unexpectedly Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI.He was the devoted husband of Sharon Bourcier Mello.Born in Newport, RI on December 30, 1940, he was the son of the late Joaquin and Laura Dutra Mello.Jack retired from his career as a plumber on the Navy Base after 25 years and previously 10 years at Chaves Plumbing and Heating. After his retirement he stayed very busy continuing to work as a plumber, mowing lawns and as a clerk at a liquor store. He was a dedicated volunteer at Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge, at the Boys and Girls Club, as well as a very active volunteer with the Girl Scouts helping them construct a float for the Bristol Fourth of July parade in which the float won First Prize. He was a member of the F.O.P.A. and the Sachuset Saltwater Fishing Club. Jack was a selfless man always saying yes to help anyone who needed it, and a friend to anyone who met him. He loved his family, and was a devoted grandfather. Jack also loved playing cards, bocce, fishing and enjoyed country music. He enjoyed nothing more then being with his family and friends. Besides his wife of 36 years, he was a devoted father to his children, Jeffrey Mello of Newport, RI, Todd Mello and his wife Holly of Newport, RI, Jackie Mello of Middletown, RI and Johnna Mello Silvia and her husband Richard of Middletown, RI, his brother Robert J. Mello and his wife Jennifer of Middletown, RI and his four grandchildren, Cassandra Elizabeth Mello, Brianna Marie Silvia, Corey John Silvia and T.J. Mello. He was also survived by his nieces Ashley and Lauren Mello, and he was a father figure to Isabel Abelheira of Middletown. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at 8:00 am from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 am in Jesus Savior Church, Broadway And Vernon Avenue, Newport. Burial will be private.Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 24, 2009, from 4-8 in the Memorial Funeral Home.
