John A. "Jack" Stohlberg, Jr., 83, of Newport died Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. Jack was born July 28, 1932 in Newport, the son of the late John A. Stohlberg Sr. and Norma E. (Clarke) Stohlberg.Jack was a lifelong Newport resident. He enjoyed being near the water and participated in freediving and spearfishing. After school, he joined the Army and served as a radio operator in Germany during the Korean War. He joined the Merchant Marines and traveled to Africa and South America bringing back many stories and artifacts. He later settled back in Newport and worked for NE Towing, a tugboat business based in Providence. Over the years Jack was a member of the Newport Yacht Club and the Masons Lodge.He is survived by his brother Richard Stohlberg of Squantum, MA; a cousin, William Bachus of Newport, and nieces and nephews, Richard, David, Paula, and Deborah.Calling hours will be Thursday, March 17 from 4:00-7:00pm at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a remembrance service at6:30pm.A graveside service with Military Honors will be held on Friday, March 18 10:00am in Island Cemetery, 30 Warner Street, Newport, RI.Memorial donations may be made to Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
