John Anthony Cicogna

Saunderstown, RI - John Anthony Cicogna, Senior Chief Petty Officer, Operations Specialist Surface Warfare Ret of Saunderstown, RI, formerly of Camden, ME, born in 1936 in the Bronx, New York passed away at the John Clarke Retirement Center in Middletown on Monday, July 21, 2008.John was the son of Filomena Cicogna and John Lennera and the beloved husband of Nancy Nicki Cicogna.He leaves behind his daughter Hilary Singho of Washington, DC, and his sons Steven Cicogna of Brunswick, ME, John Allan of Marblehead, MA and Joseph Suman of North Kingstown, RI. His son Robert Cicogna of Orono, ME passed away in August of 1991. John was papa to William, Rebecca and namesake John Romiel Jack. John also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and godchildren. SCPO Cicogna was a 30 year Navy Veteran having fought in the Korean and Viet Nam wars. Mr. Cicogna was a student at the first class of the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy at NAVSTA Newport. He was an instructor at the Naval Officer Candidate School when he retired, honorably in 1985. During the course of duty SCPO Cicogna was awarded the Gold Leaf Award for Recruiting Excellence, Chief of Naval Reserve. Mr. Cicogna was an active member at the Chapel of St. John the Divine in Saunderstown. He was a member of the Vestry for many years and a past Senior Warden. He was a volunteer for Seniors Helping Others. Visiting hours will be Thursday, July 24, 2008 from 4-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.A service of celebration and remembrance will be held on Friday, July 25, 2008, at 11:00 am in St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 87 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown. Burial will be private.Donations in memory of Mr. Cicogna may be made to the John Clarke Nursing Center Activity Fund, 600 Valley Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
