John Benjamin Smith

John Benjamin Smith, 90, of Newport died Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at Newport Hospital.He was the husband of the late Edith G. (Braman) Smith and Theresa (Watson) Cook Smith.Born on November 15, 1922 in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late John Benjamin and Gladys (Weaver) Smith. Mr. Smith served in the United States Army Air Corp as a gunner on the B-24 Bomber. He started working for the Newport Preservation Society in the 1960's, retiring in 1992. He was a member for 60 years of the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Smith enjoyed painting, wood working, making model ships and wooden boat. He is survived by his children, John B. Smith of Holliston, MA and Iverna Hanos and her husband George of Newport, RI his grandchildren, Cheryl Wenzel, Christina Carpender, Kerri Ann Smith, Eric Smith, Lauren Ellis and Andrew Smith and his great grandchildren, Brandon Wenzel, Jaron Wenzel, Cadence Wenzel, Tobias Wenzel, Adeligh Wenzel, Evangelina Wenzel, Arianna Carpender, Isabelle Carpender, Joplin Smith, Preston Smith and Sean Ellis. Calling hours will be held on, Friday, November 30, 2012, from 6-8pm, in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. His funeral will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2012, at 10am, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.Burial will be in Island Cemetery.
