John Cyril "Jack" Gainey

Newport, RI - John Cyril "Jack" Gainey passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at his home in Newport, Rhode Island after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Mary (Bolhouse) Gainey.He was born on November 12, 1937 in Lackawanna, NY to parents Cyril John and Laura Gibson Gainey. He served for over 22 years in the United States Navy retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer Two. He loved being at sea and served on many ships including the destroyer USS Dealey and the guided missile cruiser USS Albany. He served with distinction in the Republic of Viet Nam with River Section 541 receiving the Bronze Star with Valor device. Towards the end of his career he taught celestial navigation at the Newport Naval Station Officer Candidate School. After his retirement from naval service, he continued his work at sea first with a stint on the University of Rhode Island's research vessel "Endeavor" and then with a career with the Merchant Marine Service. In 2003, he served off the coast of Kuwait on a Fast Sea Lift Ship in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In addition to his wife, he leaves his brother Tom Gainey of Buffalo, NY, stepson Michael Hamilton of Portsmouth, RI and step daughter Lynne Sherrick of Bradford, PA. He also leaves Granddaughters Pamela Eschrich and Jennifer Calkins as well as Grandsons Ryan, Caleb and Owen Hamilton. He also leaves nephew Tim Gainey and niece Laura Tomaka.Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014, from 4-7pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at 11am in the funeral home, followed by his burial in Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO BOX 758517,Topeka, KS 66675.
