John E. Hall, 88, died at his Newport home Monday morning December 16 2013 from the effects of Alzheimers disease.A resident of Newport since 1985, he was born in Boston Nov 27, 1925, the son of Edwin Tileston Hall and Blanche Clough Gardner.During his residence in Newport he had served on the boards of and was active in several local organizations, including the Redwood Library, Boys and Girls Club, the Newport Tree Commission, and served as chairman of both the Harbor Management Study and the Land Use Committee. He was active in Ida Lewis Yacht Clubs J-24 races for manyseasons. He grew wonderful roses and never met a dog he didnt speak to.A veteran of the US Navy in WW II, he was awarded the Purple Heart, wounded at Okinawa when his ship was sunk by three enemy suicide bombers.He was a United Way Executive in Detroit and New York City, and after retirement, a consultant for non-profit organizations all over the country.He was a member of the Reading Room, the Redwood Library, the Mayflower Society, Society of Colonial Wars of RI and the Victorian Military Society.
