MIDDLETOWN - John Jack E. Rogers of Middletown, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 12, at the age of 89. He was the husband of the late Mary Lou Serbst Rogers. They were married for 54 years before her death in 2004. Born in Newport, the son of the late Gerald and Catherine Rogers, he lived in Middletown since 1957. He was a 1939 graduate of De La Salle Academy and a veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Area as an Aviation Radioman First Class in the US Navy. After the war, he was employed by the US Government as a letter carrier for 36 years. He worked out of the Broadway Station in Newport as well as the Middletown Post Office before retiring. He was active in Middletown Little League and Middletown Babe Ruth Baseball. He also was an avid duckpin bowler for many years. He was a communicant of St. Lucys Church, Middletown, a member of the Middletown Knights of Columbus, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He is survived by his son, John of Bristol, RI, his son Stephen and wife Jeanmarie Harpin of Portsmouth, RI, and his daughter Kathleen and husband Rick McCauley of Tiverton, RI. He also is survived by grandchildren, Melissa Rogers of West Chester, PA, Shannon Salvador and husband David of Portsmouth, Shawn Rogers and wife Kerri of Anaheim, CA, Matthew and Kristin Rogers of Portsmouth and Amanda, Megan and Connor McCauley of Tiverton. He also leaves behind great-granddaughters Ella and Lily Rose Salvador. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 9:30 am from Memorial Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am in St. Lucy Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI. Burial will be private.Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 16, 2012 from 4-7 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties
