Portsmouth, RI - John Edward Prasol, 72, of Portsmouth, RI, formerly of Newport, RI, died Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI.He was the beloved husband of Ann Marie Couto Prasol of Portsmouth, and the late Norma Catherine Hickey. Born in Hadley, MA on December 1, 1938, he was the son of the late John and Nellie Forman Prasol.Mr. Prasol served in the United States Navy. He retired in 1976 as a senior chief petty officer after 21 years in the service. He served on various refueling tankers as a boatswains mate.After his retirement he worked as an electrician for different electric contractors. He also worked as a shipping and receiving clerk for Ames department store in Middletown. After retiring as an electrician he volunteered driving elders in the community taking them to their doctors appointments and etc. He also volunteered at St. Barnabas Church, opening the church and preparing for the daily and weekend masses. He was a skilled woodworker, making clocks, and plagues and various other items. After his marriage to Ann Marie, he loved gardening and along with his wife and sister-in-law had a nice vegetable garden. Besides his wife of 3 years, he is survived by his sisters Nancy Blyda of Florence, MA, and Mildred Beal of Holyoke, MA, his beloved sister-in-law Georgina Couto of Portsmouth, RI, two aunts Helen Gesiorek and Frances Prasol, his uncle Wallace Foreman, two nephews, one niece, three grand nephews and he was preceded in death by a nephew. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, from 4-7, in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.His funeral will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2011, at 9:00am from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.
